Look at the following illustrations, and in pairs/groups, discuss what they depict (facts). Afterwards, discuss what you would have done if you were present in those special moments. Later, share your responses with the class.

The fact: This illustration depicts the mangrove forests. These mangrove forests are usually grown in saline, muddy and partially waterlogged areas. Due to the saline soil, the roots of these forest trees are quite scattered and cannot go deep into the soil. Indonesia, Brazil, Australia, and Niger account for 43% of the world’s mangrove forests. Located in Bangladesh, the Sundarbans is the single largest mangrove forest in the world and is recognized by the world as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
My thoughts on the mangrove forest: Personally, I find these different and unique forests a rare creation of nature. We need to protect our Sundarbans by any means. Also, the mangrove forest inspires me to fight against all odds and make my own place in the world.

The fact: This illustration represents our National Martyrs’ Memorial. The National Memorial is located in Savar, Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. It was designed by architect Syed Mainul Hossain. Originally, the memorial was built to commemorate the martyred freedom fighters and the dead Bengali civilians in the Liberation War of 1971. Every year on December 16th Victory Day, wreaths are offered here to remember the martyrs and innocent Bengalis killed in the Liberation War.
My thoughts on the National Martyrs’ Memorial: The memorial symbolizes the dignity and achievements of the Bengali nation. After nine months of bloody war, we won our victory on 16 December 1971. When I see the memorial, I remember the brave freedom fighters who were martyred in the liberation war. My head is bowed in respect. I will always remember these heroes with respect.

The fact: This illustration represents Bangladesh’s first and only Bangabandhu-1 satellite. Bangabandhu-1 is Bangladesh’s first geostationary communication and broadcasting satellite. It was launched on May 11, 2018 (May 12 Bangladesh time) from the Kennedy Space Center in the United States. Through this, Bangladesh became the 57th country in the list of countries that have launched their own satellites.
My thoughts on the Bangabandhu-1 satellite: Only 57 countries in the world have their own satellites, among which Bangladesh is one. I am very happy to achieve such an honor. I hope that the Bangabandhu-1 satellite will play a major role in the information technological development of Bangladesh.

The Fact: This illustration refers to a scientist named Alexander Graham Bell. He was a renowned scientist and inventor. But his biggest identity, he is one of the inventors of the telephone. In this picture, it is seen that he is talking with the help of his invented telephone. He invented the telephone in 1876. He was granted the first US patent for the telephone that year.
My thoughts on telephone: The telephone is undoubtedly one of the greatest inventions in the history of mankind. This invention has brought welfare to human life. People can now talk to their loved ones from any part of the world. Which was impossible before. I owe a lot of respect to Alexander Graham Bell for giving mankind such a beautiful and necessary technology.

You can search online sources, newspapers, magazines and news for the facts related to your chosen topic. Later, share your writings with your group and make necessary edits. Finally, present your writing in the class and invite teachers and students to read the passages and add their opinions.
Topics:
1. Impacts of Technology on Students
2. Online or Offline Class
3. Students’ Responsibility towards Community
4. Human Activities that Affect the Environment
5. Your Relationship with Your Parents
6. The Influence of Women In your Community
(1) Impacts of Technology on Students
Fact-based passage: Modern age depends on technology. Society cannot survive for a moment without technology. Education is no exception. Hence technology has permeated every level of education. Nowadays technology and education complement each other. With the expansion of technology, the teaching process is becoming easier and easier. As a result, it is possible to easily teach a large number of students in a very short time. According to the information of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education, currently 26,958 educational institutions across the country have multimedia. By studying in these multimedia classrooms, students are able to learn in a more effective way. which makes their learning experience smoother. Not only the teaching, but also the post-examination results of the students are now published on the internet. And that result is going to the mobile phone instantly. The touch of technology can be seen in all activities like admission of students, registration for exams. So it can be said that technology is a blessing in the education life of students.
Opinion-based passage: Technology now occupies a huge place in our lives. As a result of technology, our educational life has progressed a lot, our learning has accelerated. Our class teacher said that in the past, their education was very difficult as technology was not so advanced. But nowadays education has become much easier due to the availability of technology. I think so too. Because, when the Covid-19 epidemic was going on across the country, my friends and I took classes through online. Even though the educational institutions were closed, our classes were not closed, we continued our regular studies at home. Behind which there is an outstanding contribution of technology. My father said, technology will improve in future, and we will be able to study with more convenience.
(2) Online or Offline Class
Fact-based passage: Online classes provide remarkable flexibility and opportunities, allowing students to learn from anywhere at any time. Students can learn at their own pace and participate in virtual discussions from anywhere. Online courses reduce transaction costs and offer lower costs compared to their offline counterparts. However, offline classes provide face-to-face interaction with teachers and peers. Which enriches learning through immediate feedback from teachers. Studies suggest that both online and offline classes can be effective, depending on individual learning styles and preferences.
Opinion-based passage: While offline classes and online classes both have some distinctive features, they do not suit every kind of student. Students who are busy and not able to attend physical classes might prefer online classes. On the other hand, students who are not friendly with computer devices and cannot concentrate on online classes might prefer offline classes. Offline classes are better for individuals who want to develop communication skills and social interactions. The absence of physical interaction can lead to loneliness and difficulty focusing. Ultimately, the choice between online and offline classes depends on individual needs and learning styles.
(3) Students’ Responsibility towards Community
Fact-based passage: Students are the future of the nation. So students have numerous responsibilities towards the community. Students can contribute something positive to society. Students can burst with their youthful energy to face all the crises of the society. In history, we see that students came to the streets to protect the Bengali language, sacrificed their lives relentlessly, and finally got the Bengali language recognized as the state language. Therefore, in any crisis of the society as well as the country, students should come forward with responsibility. We have to unite to face the problems and present a beautiful and orderly society.
Opinion-based passage: Students have many responsibilities towards the society. I think students can take the society forward with their youthful energy. There are many helpless and broken people in our society. We must come forward in their danger. My mother said, students can stand by these helpless people with their united strength. Not only poverty, we can prevent all irregularities and chaos from our society. We can prevent environmental pollution by creating awareness among people, making the environment livable for all. So now, it is the time, students should unite and come forward to meet the needs of the society.
(4) Human Activities that Affect the Environment
Fact-based passage: Environment is getting seriously damaged due to various human activities. Human indiscriminately cutting down trees, reducing rainfall and warming the environment. Human polluting the air by burning various fuels, thereby increasing the amount of carbon dioxide in the air. People throw waste from houses and factories into the river. As a result, the river water is getting polluted, it cannot be used. Hundreds of other such counterproductive activities of humans are threatening the environment. According to daily Prothom Alo report, Dhaka ranks eighth among 110 cities in the world in terms of air pollution. Which is very dangerous. Therefore, experts say, if the environment continues to be affected as a result of human activities, then this environment will no longer be suitable for living.
Opinion-based passage: Many human activities are directly responsible for environmental threats. Every day we see our environment being polluted in various ways. For example, we are reducing oxygen by cutting down trees unnecessarily, increasing the amount of carbon dioxide in the air by burning various harmful fuels. We are polluting the water by dumping all the waste we produce into the water. But we should not do them at all. We should always keep a watchful eye on the environment, so that the environment is not polluted. We should all come forward to protect the balance of the environment and create awareness among all living in the society.
(5) Your Relationship with Your Parents
Fact-based passage: Parents are the best asset of my life. From childhood to adolescence, they raised me as much as they did. My father works hard and fulfills all my wishes. He arranged for my education, food and clothing. He drives me to school and brings me home when the school end. He is there for all my needs. At the same time, my mother takes care of me. Bathed me, showed me my homework, looked after me all the time when I was sick. My relationship with my mother is such that I cannot eat any food other than her hand-cooked food. My parents love me very much. I also love them very much.
Opinion-based passage: Every child thinks that their parents are the best in the world. Similarly, I also think my parents are the best. I love my father, because he is my trust in times of danger. I love my mother because, she can make any sacrifice for me. Like every child in the world I have a sweet relationship with my parents. I hope I can fulfill my parents’ dreams and bring smiles to their faces.
(6) The Influence of Women In your Community
Fact-based passage: To the development of a society, women have the equal contribution as the men. A society can never take full form without the influence of women. Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam said, ‘All the great creations of the world are eternally beneficial, half of them are made by women, half by men.’ That is, women have equal contribution to all the welfare works in the world. Looking at the society I live in, you can see how women are pioneers. There are women at all levels—school teachers, police officers, doctors, journalists. Just as women manage the house, they also play a great role in the development of the society. Our society is completely incomplete without the contribution of women.
Opinion-based passage: Nowadays women are progressing at an equal pace with men. Women are actively involved in various developmental activities along with men in the society. My mother said, in the past, women were very backward. They did not have much opportunity for education. But in the present time the exact opposite is seen. Now from education to work, business, where are there no women? But still some people think that women should stay at home, they should not study much. But with the passage of time, these thoughts have now changed. Women are getting educated in higher education. Practicing knowledge and contributing to the welfare of society.
